Note:
The project "L'Insieme" ("Together" in Italian) was founded in 1997 and brings together eight famous producers in the Langa. The team was created by six founding members: Elio Altare, the Corino brothers, Federico Grasso, the Revello brothers, and Mauro Veglio from La Morra; plus Gianfranco Alessandria from Monforte d'Alba. All winegrowers may join in the association, provided that they share fully and respect the rules of the group. In fact, the group has added Giuseppe Caviola from Dogliani and La Morandina from Castiglione Tinella.
L'Insieme is a voluntary assocation of wine producers organized around the social objective of contributing to the promotion of the territory, its resources. and the people who inhabit it.
Each of the eight producers makes, along with its regular wines, a small number of bottles of L'Insieme - generally between 1000 and 2000 bottles per year, with a maximum of 5000 bottles, according to the rules of the association. Each producer creates his own L'Insieme, a blend whose components are up to the producer, mixing the traditional Piemontese grape varieties Nebbiolo of Barolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto with other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, or Petit Verdot. The result is a distinctive wine that reflects the winegrower who has made and bottled it. The labels as well have personalized logos, but with a graphic style and color that is the same for all. Although each producer can select the blend, all of them are subject to the rules of using only grapes of the highest quality and of contributing to the association 5 euros per each bottle produced. (Note that this rule applies to every bottle produced, not just bottles that are sold!)
The L'Insieme is a not-for-profit association. It engages in activities aimed at safeguarding and promoting the cultural patrimony of the region, with particular focus on the culture of the farmer, as exemplified in his trades and arts.
The Board of Directors is run by the six founding members. A select committee composed of scholars, journalists, and collaborators considers each year the proposals submitted to the association and selects those to be supported with the collected funds.
L'Insieme is a small but quite concrete example of "wine-solidarity". Over the years, its members' contributions have been distributed among diverse projects, including Emergency Assistance for Gino Strada, the Mission in Ecuador of Father Onore, the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo, the association "Granello di Senape" in Bra, the social cooperative "Emmaus" in Alba, and many others.
In order to support the initiatives of the association, its members also have become the subject of a book, "L'Insieme, il cerchio aperto" ("L'Insieme, the Open Circle"), which features text by Sergio Miravalle and images by Mauro Vallinotto. This book gathers together the stories of the families of the winegrowers and explains the ends of the association.
